Best coffee beans
What's the best coffee bean? Arabica, robusta, blends... our guide to choosing the right bean to suit your taste.
Looking for the best coffee beans ? You're not alone. But beware: there is no universal answer. What's "best" for one may not be for another. Between arabica, robusta, blends, exotic origins or full-bodied profiles, the right choice depends above all on your tastes... and your method of preparation.
If your aim is to find the best coffee beans for you, it's best to understand what really differentiates a good bean from a standard one. Here's how.
The "best grain" is up to you
There's no such thing as a universally "best" coffee. It all depends on your tastes... and how you prepare your coffee.
Do you like round, subtle coffees with soft notes on the palate? If so, you'll probably be attracted to arabicas from high altitude terroirs, with their more delicate aromas.
On the contrary, if you're looking for a full-bodied, intense cup that wakes you up from the very first sip, some well-crafted blends or robustas will do the trick.
Your preparation method also counts. The same bean will not reveal itself in the same way in espresso, filter or piston brewing. Some coffees become rounder with gentle extraction, while others deliver their full potential under high pressure. That's why it's so important to choose a coffee that's right for you... and your profile.
Arabica vs robusta: not a duel, but a range of uses
We often hear that Arabica is "better" than Robusta. In reality, it's more complex - and far more interesting than that.
Arabica seduces with its finesse: fruity or floral aromas, low bitterness, smoothness on the palate. It's an excellent base for lovers of subtle coffees, especially in the mild method.
Robusta, on the other hand, has its strengths: a more present bitterness, a caffeinated strength appreciated in the early morning, and a generous crema in espresso.
A good blend can marry the two: the aromatic complexity of arabica, supported by the strength of robusta. A balance sought by many coffee lovers... and mastered by good roasters.
